We offer a choice of four different trails to suit your appetite for adventure. Each will give you a different experience of the rugged and gloriously beautiful Tramuntana mountains, which are recently declared as UNESCO world heritage.Running for about 90 kilometres from the south west to the north east of Mallorca, they are formed of limestone, often weathered into unusual shapes by the wind and water. The range runs close to the sea and offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the island, with breathtaking views of the coastline from many of the higher peaks.
The mountains were historically a rich source of raw materials and there is plenty of evidence of man’s long habitation. You will see charcoal platforms, ice houses, lime ovens and numerous tracks which formed a communication network, are now used by walkers and riders. The land belongs to large estates, which have traditionally been in the hands of Mallorcan aristocracy and wealthy families, though some are now publicly owned.
Whilst you ride you will see goats, sheep and donkeys. On one of the trails you will even find cows on a rich green plateau. The pine martens, genets and weasels keep themselves well hidden but you are very likely to see birds of prey such as osprey, falcon and the black vulture. The scenery and the vegetation frequently change and you will often encounter bare rock, scented pine forest and ancient holm oak woodland in the same day’s ride. The mountains are the source of the island’s fresh water which courses down to the island’s growing regions. In the verdant foot hills, there are orange, clementine, olive, almond and lemon groves.
The horses are strong and hardy and know the mountain terrain well. You will be surprised at their willingness to climb and descend steep tracks. They know the stopping points and look forward to the rich grazing that the higher and cooler conditions offer. Your guide will be Lorenzo a native and very typical mallorquine who is quietly proud of both the island and the horses he has trained. If you want to know more, he will tell you about Mallorcan traditions, history and food.
